Aqua massage Pilates aim is to make you feel relaxed and at ease.
What to expect at your treatment or lesson
Aqua massage Pilates is for everyone to experience and enjoy and also suitable for many conditions, such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, scoliosis, disc condition, hip, shoulder injuries, rehabilitation, pre or post operation strengthening and pregnancy.
However this is not a comprehensive list and it is advisable to consult with your doctor, physiotherapist or Chiropractor before you start any new exercise programme. If exercises have been advised by a therapist, they will be reviewed and new exercises instructed with the addition of the cushion to allow improvement upon existing levels of strength.
Aqua massage Pilates aim is to make you feel relaxed and at ease. Prior to your first treatment or workout, a pre activity readiness questionnaire (PARQ) medical history is completed. There is a list of conditions and a space to fill in any other information that you may have, including a physiotherapist, chiropractor or consultants report. I will discuss this information closely with you to find out more about any movement restrictions that you have and assess how we will start your new programme.
You will be introduced to the set up of the massage couch or Pilates machine and shown how to lie correctly onto the cushions for optimal alignment. The first time you lie onto the cushion you will feel it support you from the top of your shoulders all the way through to the base of the spine. There will also be a head support to help allow the spine to find its natural positioning on the cushion. If your treatment is a massage, the legs relax over a second heated water cushion with a bolster underneath.
The cushions are warming and comforting as your body relaxes into them. I will check your body position and alignment checking for muscle or joint imbalances or restrictions. This assessment starts from the feet and ankles and then legs. As the pelvis, hipbones and shoulders are checked you will feel a very gentle rocking motion which allows the water to move into the areas that need support and show any muscular or joint imbalances. It is at this stage of the assessment that you will also become more connected to your body’s requirements. There may also be some gentle stretching or mobilisation of joints to feel how the area is moving or identify if there are any further restrictions.
Once the assessment is complete, treatment of massage, stretching, lymphatic drainage or Pilates corrective exercises will follow. The initial consultation will be one hour and fifteen minutes and lessons thereafter are one hour. Massage or stretching can be booked for half hour or 45 minutes if a shorter treatment is required.
