Simple Bread

Here is a simple bread recipe you’ll use again and again. Why not try different
shapes like plaits or knots and different toppings to create an artisan bread display and
get the children or grandchildren involved for a fun family activity.

Ingredients
500g white flour
1½ tsp Hovis fast action yeast
300ml warm water
1 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp salt

 

Pour the flour, sugar and salt into a large bowl, then mix in the yeast.Roll up your sleeves, mix in the water using your hands, it’s very gloopy.

Dust a work surface with flour and knead the dough well.

To kneed push once with the heal of you hands away from the body, rotate 90° fold in half towards you, push once with your palms, rotate 90° fold in half, push with your palms, rotate, fold, push, rotate, fold, push continue for 8 -10 minutes.

Divide the dough in four then shape into long thin sticks by pulling and rolling, slash the dough diagonally with a knife along the stick.

Lay the loaves on a greased baking tray and cover with cling film.

Leave in a warm place until it has doubled in size – about one hour.

Preheat the oven to 220C.

Bake in the oven for 20 – 30 minutes or until golden, they sound hollow when you knock them on the base.

You can also make rolls, a loaf or plait three sticks together.
